Kangan Institute recognised for workplace health and safety

Kangan Institute has been recognised for its commitment to psychological health and safety.

The TAFE was honoured as one of two finalists for the 2024 Worksafe Victoria Awards’ Commitment to Prevention of Mental Injury in the Workplace category, with the awards ceremony taking place last night.

The award celebrates Kangan Institute's comprehensive program to:

• Support staff with mental health conditions to thrive at work

• Promote positive aspects of work

• Prevent psychosocial risks at work

The program was developed in response to staff insights for wellbeing support, driven by the impacts of COVID-19. Key initiatives included:

• Mental health first aider training and community of practice for over 150 staff.

• Comprehensive psychological health and safety training for all leaders.

• Specialised training for trades educators supporting apprentices.

• Updated policies and procedures to improve processes and reduce work-related stress.

The program aligns with Kangan Institute's plan to empower staff to change lives through the power of education and skills and it has shown tangible results:

• A 9% drop in staff stress levels (2024 People Matter Survey conducted among staff).

• Recognition as a Skilled Organisation by Mental Health First Aid Australia.
