More than 100 students get hands-on at Upload Your Future

Kangan Institute's Information Communication Technology (ICT) department held its second Upload Your Future event for 2012 to promote the benefits of a career in information technology.

Held at Broadmeadows campus on 14th August, this industry-led information session provided students from around Melbourne with a first-hand opportunity to meet people studying and working in the field and learn about training, pathway and career options.

Guest speakers included Mark Flanagan (3D modeller), Sebastian Ng (Swinburne University of Technology academic) and Ranko Cosic, an ICT graduate who completed the Diploma of Software Development at Kangan Institute and accessed pathways into a PhD in information systems at the University of Melbourne.

Attendees had an opportunity to work in groups and get hands-on in our green screen special effects room. Students also had a chance to learn about 3D imaging and Adobe Photoshop as well as complete units for the Certificate I in Information, Digital Media and Technology.

To keep things fun on the day, a LAN competition was held for students, with the winner of each group awarded prizes ranging from $50 JB Hi-Fi vouchers to gadgets such as web cams, USBs, computer stands and remote mouse.

Terry McNamara, Kangan Institute's ICT manager, said the event was immensely successful, with highly positive feedback from participating students. "This event was a chance to showcase the many benefits of an ICT career and the ways that Kangan Institute can help students achieve their goals after school," he said. "Our survey indicated that participants were highly engaged throughout the day's activities, with 30% of students stating they liked everything about the event.

But even more significantly, our survey showed that the number of students considering an ICT career had doubled as a result of attending the event." The following schools attended: Ashwood Secondary Glenroy College Kangan Institute - VCAL Rowville Secondary Roxburgh Park Secondary
