A Game-Changing National Skills Week: Haircuts, Hands-On Learning, and Community Spirit

Kangan Institute’s Cremorne Campus came alive on 20 August 2024, as talented hairdressing and barbering students offered haircuts to the public for a gold coin donation, marking a highlight of National Skills Week 2024. This unique event not only showcased the high-quality training provided by Kangan Institute, but also allowed the Cremorne community to support the next generation of skilled professionals.

Throughout the day, campus windows were transformed into dynamic displays, presenting barbering, hairdressing, beauty, and fashion skills. These live demonstrations emphasised the importance of practical, hands-on learning experiences in developing job-ready skills – a key message of National Skills Week.

“The Diploma of Beauty at Kangan is a game-changer for me – because this will give me additional skills to enable me to set up my own beauty business,” said Neda, a Kangan Institute student.

By connecting with local communities and industries, TAFEs like ours are at the forefront of providing relevant, in-demand skills training that contributes to Australia’s economic growth and meets future workforce needs.

The event was further enlivened by a special appearance from Melbourne Storm players, who showed their support for the students. Among them was Marion Seve, a Storm player and current Kangan Institute barbering student. Seve took full advantage of National Skills Week to give his teammates a fresh cut under the expert supervision of our barbering teacher.

National Skills Week, held from 19-25 August 2024, is a nationwide initiative to promote the diverse and rewarding career pathways available through vocational education and training. This year’s theme, “Game Changer,” highlights how vocational education is transforming lives, industries, and communities across Australia.

“I have just graduated from the Certificate III in Hairdressing at Kangan Institute. This course has been a game-changer for me. I am currently doing photoshoots, commercials and campaigns in the career path I wanted,” said Ade.

Kangan Institute’s National Skills Week celebration is a perfect example of how vocational education and training can be a game changer for individuals and the broader community.
