Bendigo Kangan Institute appoints Chief Executive Officer

The Board of Bendigo Kangan Institute (BKI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sally Curtain as the Institute’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The BKI Group, which comprises both Kangan Institute and Bendigo TAFE, operates ten TAFE campuses stretching from Docklands to Echuca.

Following an extensive search process the BKI Board identified Ms Curtain as an outstanding candidate for the CEO role. Ms Curtain is an accomplished public sector senior executive with significant experience across state and local government.

BKI’s Board Chair Peter Harmsworth AO said Ms Curtain’s appointment will enable the Institute to continue to evolve as a lead provider of vocational training and education programs across the state.

“It is very exciting to have Sally Curtain join us at BKI,” he said.

“Ms Curtain has led major organisational improvements and transformation programs through her executive roles in the Department of Justice, City of Casey and recently with VicRoads.

“Her extensive experience and leadership expertise are important to ensure BKI is well positioned to meet the significant challenges now facing the TAFE sector.”

A key priority for Ms Curtain will be to examine options for the redevelopment of Kangan Institute’s Broadmeadows campus to ensure its facilities, training provision and student services are reflective of contemporary TAFE developments.

Ms Curtain felt honoured to have been appointed as the next CEO of BKI.

“I feel fortunate to lead such an important institution for our communities and my focus will be to work collaboratively with the Board, staff, students, industry and the broader community to ensure BKI continues to evolve and makes an ongoing significant positive contribution to their lives,” said Ms Curtain.

Mr Harmsworth also acknowledged the role of Phill Murphy, interim CEO.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Phill Murphy who has done an outstanding job as interim Chief Executive Officer in using his extensive experience in TAFE to provide strong and effective leadership, and ensuring the Institute is achieving its strategic and financial goals,” said Mr Harmsworth.

“Mr Murphy’s efforts have provided a clear platform for sustainable growth and we look forward to welcoming Ms Curtain as CEO at this important time in continuing the great work of Mr Murphy in driving forward the future development of BKI.”

Ms Curtain will formally assume the role on 21 October 2019.
