Twenty recipients of an Australia Awards Fellowship- Papua New Guinea (PNG) scholarship successfully completed the Melbourne component of their Certificate IV in Project Management, enjoying a celebration and farewell ceremony on 4 December at Kangan Institute’s Docklands campus.
This is the second group of students from PNG to train at Kangan Institute under the Australia Awards Fellowships- PNG scholarship program, which funds tertiary study in Australia and mentoring in PNG to achieve targeted organisational change.
“In Papua New Guinea, the Australia Awards program is one of the largest scholarship programs funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade,” said Kangan Institute CEO Amanda Brook.
“Kangan Institute is delighted to be part of this Australian Aid program which targets human resources and leadership gaps in areas identified as priorities by the governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea.”
During the first program, Kangan Institute worked closely with the Australia Awards - PNG Facility in Port Moresby supporting scholarship recipients to implement practical projects back in their home provinces, including Manus, Gulf and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
The current group completed one week of training in Papua New Guinea and another five weeks in Melbourne involving face-to-face learning of techniques and skills in project management. The students, all provincial administration staff, are responsible for the provision of health, education, economic and agricultural services in some of PNG’s most remote provinces. The group will return to Papua New Guinea to complete the next phase of the scholarship program – project implementation within their organisations – and are due to graduate in May 2016.
