Sustainable Plumbing Centre taps into demand in Broadmeadows

A fit-for-purpose Sustainable Plumbing Centre will be fast-tracked at Kangan Institute’s Broadmeadows campus thanks to a $5.5m grant from the Victorian Government.

The funding comes through the $55m TAFE Asset Maintenance Fund which is supporting upgrades to TAFEs across Victoria to create jobs and help drive the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

Kangan Institute’s Sustainable Plumbing Centre will enable all of the TAFE’s plumbing courses to be co-located at Broadmeadows and will better position it to meet trade training demand in Melbourne north.

With such a specialist facility the TAFE, which is part of Bendigo Kangan Institute, will be able to add Certificates III and IV plumbing qualifications to its current stable of courses.

Chief Executive Sally Curtain says the new facility will help meet the skills gap while addressing specific industry training needs.

“Sustainable plumbing is as much about making things last as it is saving water, and we know from working closely with our industry partners that this is the mindset any new trainees entering the workforce will need. This will support the increased focus on creating sustainable trades practices that seek to reduce waste on building and construction sites.”

The Sustainable Plumbing Centre will include workshops and classrooms and ‘sandpits’ for a simulated workplace environment and will have capacity to train 300 additional students - mostly apprentices. It will be developed in a refurbished building on campus with construction due to commence in May 2021 and expected to be completed by Semester 2 (July 2021).

The funding is part of the $1.18 billion announced by the Government for critical education infrastructure projects for schools and early childhood to help drive the state’s economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
