Kangan Institute retail baking students have clinched the top three awards for Gateau making at the 2019 Victorian Baking Show.
Held from 2-3 March in Shepparton, the event involved industry and student competitors in a bake-off across more than 30 categories.
A total of eight Kangan Institute baking students entered the competition, with three students achieving the following awards:
For first place winner Nibal Almarri, the award is the perfect first step towards building a successful future in Australia after leaving Syria and arriving on a humanitarian visa in 2016.
“I was happy, surprised and thrilled to win,” said Ms. Almarri who also completed English training at Kangan Institute’s Broadmeadows campus.
“Having recently arrived in Australia I didn’t expect to compete and win at state level. I wouldn’t have such an achievement without my teachers’ guidance.”
Kangan Institute’s CEO Trevor Schwenke said the students’ wins reflected their passion and skills in the field.
“We’re very proud of our student bakers for excelling at state competitions like the Victorian Baking Show where students are competing against industry professionals,” said Mr. Schwenke.
“Our students’ success reflects their top-notch skills and immense passion for the craft of baking.
“Kangan Institute is proud to have played a part in their achievements and wish them the very best for the future.”
