Empowering Pathways: The Indigenous Engagement Centre at Kangan Institute

At Kangan Institute, we believe in fostering a learning environment that celebrates diversity and inclusion. The Indigenous Engagement Centre (IEC) stands as a beacon of support and cultural recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Located in Broadmeadows on the ancestral lands of the Gunung-Willam-Balluk clan of the Wurundjeri peoples, the IEC has a strong educational reputation for Indigenous Australians in Victoria. With a history stretching back to the 1990s, the IEC team has helped more than 300 students each year take positive steps towards a brighter future and create opportunities for themselves during their educational journey.

The building, which is also called Gunung-Willam-Balluk Learning Centre, is named in honour and after its traditional custodians (Gunung-Willam-Balluk clan) of the Wurundjeri.

A Space to Thrive

The IEC provides a culturally safe and welcoming space where First Nation students can pursue their educational goals while staying connected to their heritage. Our team is dedicated to nurturing an environment that encourages personal growth, academic success, and career readiness.

Tailored Support Services

The IEC offers a range of services to help students navigate their educational journey. From one-on-one tutoring and study assistance to financial aid guidance, the team is here to provide tailored support every step of the way. Career advice, mentorship, and networking opportunities further enhance students' ability to achieve their aspirations. First Nation students can also access Kangan Institute’s wide range of free wellbeing and support services

Celebrating Culture

The IEC is more than just a place for learning—it’s a hub for cultural connection. Regular events, workshops, and celebrations, such as NAIDOC Week activities, bring together students, staff, and the wider community to honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Building a Brighter Future

Through partnerships with local communities, employers, and government initiatives, the IEC supports students in transitioning from education to meaningful employment. Programs like the Indigenous Employment Pathways Project ensure that students have access to real-world opportunities that align with their skills and interests.
