How does the Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation (Pre-vocational) work?
The Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation (AUR20720) is a work ready pre-apprenticeship course designed to meet the requirements of students looking to start a career in the automotive industry through study pathway options to an apprenticeship or higher education.
For applicants looking to study this course, there are no set prerequisites, although, it is a recommendation that applicants have satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills. Mature students looking to pursue this course, must have sufficient work experience to successfully undertake the course.
The course is designed to provide and prepare candidates with broad knowledge and practical workshop skills on a range of automotive areas. These areas include, motor mechanics, auto electrical, parts interpreting, heavy vehicles, light engines, engine reconditioning and marine mechanics.

What will I study?
Candidates will study a number of motor mechanic and auto electrical competencies. The course modules for this certificate includes:
- Apply safe working practices
Safe work practices are crucial to the workplace, this module incorporates the Worksafe Australia Guidelines and encompasses competencies necessary to apply basic safety and emergency procedures to maintain a safe workplace for staff, customers and others. - Carry out industry research
Candidates are required to carry out their own industry research to develop an understanding of the automotive industry. Participants must be able to identify and access sources of information on the automotive industry and obtain information that assists effective work performance. Candidates are expected to apply knowledge of the industry to enhance the quality of their work performance and monitor the current industries developments and issues. - Use and maintain workplace tools and equipment
Within this module students are required to select, safely use and maintain workplace tooling and equipment. This includes the identification and confirmation of work requirement, preparation for work, selection, use, servicing, maintenance and storage of tooling and equipment, completion of work finalisation processes, including clean-up and documentation. Individuals need to display judgement and problem-solving abilities in managing personal work activities and contributing to a productive team environment. - Set up and use welding equipment
The setting up of equipment correctly is crucial in the workplace. Students will cover how to safely and correctly set up welding equipment following the correct safety procedures required within this industry. They will then be taught how to correctly use the welding equipment enabling them to perform this procedure correctly. - Dismantle and assemble engine four stroke multi-cylinder (petrol)
Students are required to learn how to dismantle and reassemble a multi-cylinder four-stroke engine. They will be required to plan and prepare the task, dismantle the engine and inspect the components, reassemble the engine and check the engine operator, maintain the work area, tools and equipment.
- Remove and replace suspension front springs
This module requires students to remove and replace the suspension front springs. This task requires the learner to plan and prepare the task, remove the suspension and inspect the components, replace them if necessary and reassemble the suspension front springs and check it performs correctly. - Remove and replace wheel and tyre assemblies
Another performance required by students is to remove and replace wheel and tyre assemblies. This task requires the student to plan and prepare the task, remove the wheel and tyre and inspect the components, replace them when necessary and reassemble the wheel and tyres correctly. - Operate electrical test equipment
Students will be formally trained on how to operate electrical test equipment. This module requires the learner to plan and prepare the tasks, select the correct equipment, test electrical and electronic circuits, and check and store the electrical test equipment. - Recharge batteries
Candidates throughout this module are required to recharge a vehicle’s battery. Candidates will need to plan and prepare the task, investigate battery types and connections, inspect, test and charge batteries and maintain work area, tools and equipment. - Construct basic electronics circuits
Students will be required to construct and test basic electronic circuits using a small number of standard electronic components. They are required to plan and prepare the task, select the correct equipment, construct and test electronic circuits, and test, maintain and store the electrical test equipment. - Participate in basic vehicle servicing operations
Within this module, candidates will be required to perform a range of basic servicing operations on cars, heavy vehicles and motorcycles within an automotive service or repair business.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will show that students have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. This may include written, oral or practical methods. You will be advised in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. Candidates have the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided with the information. This may provide candidates to enter the workforce to access a broad range of employment opportunities in various fields.
What employment opportunities will I have?
Once you have completed the Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation (AUR20720) you will have completed part of the theoretical component of the relevant apprenticeship/Certificate III. This will assist you to enter an apprenticeship in a chosen area of study. Candidates may also be able to use some credits towards your apprenticeship.
