Meet Jacey Toma – Inspiring future learners in pathology collection!

My journey into the world of healthcare and teaching has been unique and incredibly rewarding.

I started my clinical career back in 2012 as a Pathology Collector at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where I worked for seven years. That was my first job after studying at RMIT University, and it allowed me to build a strong foundation in healthcare. In 2015, I began teaching at an RTO while still working at the hospital. Before all of that, I worked as a florist for over a decade, creating beautiful arrangements for weddings, events, and corporate setups—a profession that taught me creativity and a strong work ethic.

After my time at Royal Melbourne Hospital, I pursued a Certificate III in Barbering (SHB30516) at Kangan Institute's Cremorne campus and even managed our family’s barbershop in North Melbourne. I then worked at a GP clinic, managing patient bookings, clinic administration, and pathology collection. But deep down, I always missed teaching and was thrilled when I got the opportunity to join the Kangan Institute team earlier this year as a Pathology Teacher.

What I enjoy most about teaching the Certificate III in Pathology Collection (HTL37215) is watching students acquire new skills and grow in confidence. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that I’m helping them develop the skills and knowledge to excel in their field. I strive to create an interactive and engaging learning environment, getting to know each student and what motivates them. One of the most rewarding aspects is visiting them during their placements and seeing them succeed in real-world settings.

For anyone exploring a career in teaching, I would say that it’s a profession full of meaning and impact. Sharing your expertise and seeing the next generation carry forward your knowledge is both humbling and inspiring. Of course, there are challenges, such as managing difficult personalities or balancing administrative tasks, but these are part of any job. At the end of the day, teaching is a way to give back to the community and ensure that our profession and skills continue to thrive. Working with a supportive team at Kangan Institute has been a fantastic experience, and I’m grateful to be part of such a dedicated group of educators.
