Baturay Kok

“When I first started at Kangan in 2019, I couldn’t use public transport, I needed a support worker, and I struggled with my confidence and communication skills,” shares Baturay Kok, a student of the Certificate I in Work Education (22566VIC). Fast forward six years, and Baturay’s transformation is nothing short of remarkable.

The Certificate I in Work Education is designed for post-compulsory school-age learners with permanent intellectual disabilities, equipping them with the skills to explore work options and pathways to further vocational education. The course focuses on building employability and work readiness through practical learning, personal management skills, and communication development.

Baturay’s journey highlights the program’s impact. “Now, I come to TAFE without a support worker, I’m very good at using public transport, following transport rules and apps, and I feel way more confident speaking to others—even doing public speaking,” he says proudly.

The course’s structured approach supports learners through various activities, including role play, fieldwork, presentations, assignments, and problem-solving scenarios. These assessments ensure students gain hands-on experience and develop practical skills essential for real-world success.

Baturay credits the program for helping him grow both personally and professionally. “I’ve learned to develop an individual vocational plan and gained personal management skills that help me at work and in my daily life,” he explains. Practical placements with support allowed Baturay to apply his skills in workplace environments, further enhancing his confidence and abilities.

The course also focuses on interpersonal communication skills, an area where Baturay has seen significant improvement. “I feel comfortable speaking in front of groups now, and I’ve learned how to communicate effectively with others in a workplace,” he adds.

The Certificate I in Work Education offers a comprehensive curriculum, covering topics such as health and safety, preparing for employment, and contributing to a team environment. For students like Baturay, these skills are not just theoretical—they’re life-changing.

“I’m grateful for the support I’ve received at Kangan. This course has helped me become more independent and confident in myself,” Baturay says.

His story is a testament to the program’s ability to empower students, helping them achieve their goals and embrace new opportunities. With determination and the right guidance, Baturay is now confidently navigating his way toward a brighter future.
