Kono Raqitawa

“Before coming to Kangan, I didn’t have much confidence. I found it hard to make new friends, do work experience, or speak in front of others,” says Kono Raqitawa, a student currently enrolled in the Certificate I in Work Education (22566VIC). Kono’s journey began in 2023 when he started the program to develop skills for employment and independence.

The Certificate I in Work Education is designed to support post-compulsory school-age learners with permanent intellectual disabilities. It aims to build employability and work-readiness skills while helping students explore vocational options. The program covers a range of topics, including personal management skills for work, vocational activities, practical placements, health and safety, and interpersonal communication skills.

Through this course, Kono has experienced a significant transformation. “Now, I feel I’ve learned to talk in front of others, make new friends, and I’ve received really good reports at Brite,” he shares proudly.

One of the highlights of the course is its practical approach to learning. Students participate in practical placements, which provide hands-on experience in real workplace settings. This opportunity has been pivotal for Kono, allowing him to develop confidence and apply the skills he’s learned in class.

The assessment process is flexible and supportive, including written, oral, and practical methods conducted both in class and on excursions. Students like Kono are well-prepared for these assessments, knowing in advance what is required and having opportunities for reassessment if needed.

The skills Kono has gained through this course extend beyond the classroom. He has improved his ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively with others, and manage tasks independently. These skills have not only boosted his employability but also given him a sense of self-assurance in everyday life.

“I’m excited about what’s next and how I can use these skills in the future,” Kono says. His story exemplifies the positive impact of Kangan Institute’s Certificate I in Work Education, demonstrating how the program empowers students to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

Kono’s journey is a shining example of how education can change lives. The Certificate I in Work Education offers more than just vocational training—it provides a pathway to confidence, independence, and meaningful opportunities for the future. For Kono, it’s a step toward a brighter tomorrow.
